Georgia PKU Connect would like to extend a big thank you to U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson for sponsoring the 2016 National PKU Awareness Day Resolution – S. Res 627! Senator Isakson also passed the inaugural PKU Awareness Resolution in 2012. Since that time, December 3rd has become a national day of PKU education and community building! In addition to inspiring fundraising events and the outpouring of personal story sharing through social media, the resolution also serves as an important tool for medical foods advocacy. Special thanks to U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin for co-sponsoring this resolution with Senator Isakson for the last two years! We are so grateful for Senator Baldwin’s partnership in raising awareness for PKU!
Hot off the press! This December, the U.S. House and Senate passed the Fiscal Year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act and expanded TRICARE coverage of medical foods for PKU! This legislation marks the first time federal legislation has included a requirement to cover PKU treatment. We look forward to working with the National PKU Alliance and other advocacy partners to continue building on this success to achieve access to treatment for all! Thank you to U.S. Senators McCain, Graham, and Reed and U.S. Representatives Heck, Smith, Thornberry, and Davis for championing medically necessary foods coverage in the FY17 NDAA!
A personal thank you note makes a big difference! Consider sending a message of appreciation to these supportive congressional members and their staff.
